Concrete Minerals Zombie Girl Set, Time to play with colour!

Today's blog is going to be all about Concrete Minerals fabulous eye shadows.

 

Below is a look that I created using some of the eye shadows from Concrete Minerals large selection of colours available. All of which are mineral based, completely Vegan and Cruelty-Free as well as made without preservatives or fillers. Which for Make Up Artist is exactly what you want to hear!

 

As you can see below the pigments are pretty damn good...

 

 

Now let's get to the wonderful products that I used to create the look above.

I bought the eye catching Zombie Girl collection as well as 3 other loose eye shadows which took my fancy.

 

The first thing that drew me into these products were the quirky names given to the different colours as well as the fabulously art work on the front of the tin by Michael Cook, very rockabilly.

  

So the colours that are included in the tin include the following (from top row, Left ----> Right); "Nightmare" (gorgeous purple), "Living Dead" (luscious green) and "The Vaccine" (baby blue/grey tone)

 

From bottom row, left ---->right;

"Quarantine" (pinkie purple tone), "Graveyard" (light brown tones with slight shimmer of pink) and "Blood and Guts" (rusty red/brown with this beautiful shimmer of blue tones)

 

As I said above, wicked memorable names that suit that rockabilly punk style the brand gives off. Very me!

 

Below are the swatches on skin; from left to right; "Quarantine", "Nightmare", "Graveyard", "Living Dead", "Blood and Guts" and " The Vaccine".

As you can see they are all lovely shimmery mineral based colours each with an undertone that sparkles through.

 

 

 The other colours I bought were loose eye shadows; "Napalm" (bright orange), "Smut" (dark/dirty pink/purple tones) and "Kinky" (gorgeous dark black with navy blue/teal sparkly tones)

 

 Below in the swatch the colours are from the bottom up; "Napalm", "Smut" and "Kinky".

Like I said all the colours have this sparkly hint (or in some of them more then just a hint!) of shimmery tones that just add that extra dimention to the eye shadows allowing them to look different in different lighting. Bonus!

They are all buildable in colour and work even stronger when using a eye shadow primer underneath; Concrete Minerals offers their own primer called "Electric Eye Primer" which I am wearing in these looks. Again its 100% vegan and filler/preservative free with a soft texture. A little goes a long way with this product. 

For this look I combined "Blood and Guts" with "Graveyard" to create a multi dimensioned application, with "Smut" applied at the ends of the eyes to create that elongated eye effect. Underneath on the lash line I've used "Napalm" for an extra little kick of attention.

 

Fiery red brows seem to set the whole look off further with matching red lips defined by black liner in the corners for that perfect pout.

 

So what do you guys think?

 

I would definitely recommend the products above. Concrete Minerals also offer Pro Matte Eye shadows which is a selection of bright matte shades (which will be my next purchase I feel, loving the look of Hi-Fi!), Lip tints, Nail polishes and other collections such as their colour stacks.

Summer Brights using Sugar Pill makeup

Today's blog is going to be a quick one about a look I did a few days ago which I've had a lot of people asking about. Now I would love to do a tutorial video to show the madness in my colours but at the moment I don't have the equipment to film it but fingers crossed soon that will change and you'll get to see a tutorial on the application rather just a run through of products.

 

So, here is the look. I am totally loving matching up my hair to my make because of all the different shades of purple/blue going on at the side!

 

 

The first that I do is my eyebrows, some people like to do the brows last but I like to do it first because I feel that it frames my eye work allowing me to judge if the makeup is going just right.

The best brow brush to use for this is Illamasqua's Angled Brush, £19, the reason why it works so well for brows (as well as eyeliner) is because the brush hairs are short therefore you have more control to the line work. I found this brush gives full the straightest line work.

 

 

The colours that used on the brows for this look was a fade of Sugar Pill Cosmetics Heart Breaker palette. Starting with "velocity", which is the in your face blue, at the beginning of the brows fading into "2am", purple shade, and "Mochi", that gorgeous aqua green/blue colour, applied to the tail of the brow. I love this combination because it goes well with the fades in my hair but also its nice summer brow colour, something different then your average brown or black brows. If you want to stand out from the crowd I recommend you brighten those brows!

 

 

The eye shadow is a blended combination of "Mochi" from the palette above with "Poison Plum", the bright purple, and "Buttercupcake" , that radiant yellow,  from Sugar Pill's Burning Heart palette. These colours work so well together with the "Mochi" working with the brows and "Poison Plum" working against "Buttercupcake" as a contrasting colour. Ever wanted your eye shadow to stand out, choose colours which are opposite each other on the colour wheel, these colours will 'Pop' when put next to each other!

 

 

As you can see the Sugar Pill palettes have the most amazing pigments and strong colours that apply as you see them, no wishy washy colours. Bonus to those who are attending IMATS London next week, Sugar Pill will be attending with all there marvellous colours and products. I can't wait to go and meet the Sugar Pill girls, they are my rainbow icons!

 

 

To finish the eyes off and also match the brows further I added "Kandy Eye" glitter sprinkles in "Shock Tart" underneath the eyes, which is a shock blue colour that closely matches Sugarpill's "velocity". This adds a little glitter bomb to the look and sparkles beautifully in the sun!

 

 

Finish the eyes off using Eyeko's Skinny Liquid eyeliner and Eye Do Mascara, both fabulous products. You can read a review on the mascara in a previous blog. The liner works incredibly well allowing for good definition and control of the eyeliner. The only thing you need to take care with when using the eyeliner is making sure the glitter doesn't get stuck on the felt tip end because it does tend to 'clog' it up slightly.

 

 

So the finished look..it is one of my favourite and I love the products that were used as they work so well.

The lips are OCC matte lip tar in "Seedless grape red" with a purple lip liner for definition.

White Walker / Ice Zombie Make Up Application

Playing with MakeUp....

Today's blog is going to be all about makeup, this past week I have been feeling very creative with my makeup and felt the need to add a little glamour to my teaching session, to inspire my lovely students to flex their creative skills and work outside the norm of their everyday makeup.

 

 

 

So my first look using +illamasqua's Fame and Pivot eye shadow as well as a mixture of +Sugarpill 's Acidberry. I also applied Illasmasqua's Obsidian on the outer corners of the eyes to add some depth. My eyebrows are done using Demon by Illamasqua and the lipstick is Maneater shaded using a deep purple lip liner (I used Barry M).

 

 

This one is my favourite look this week, its using the yummy Apocalips lipstick from Illamasqua shaded using a black eyeliner to add a nice pouty effect. Purple eyebrows are done using Inception eye shadow from Illamasqua. I love the purple and green effect.

 

 

 

 
 This look was using a my new Illamasqua lipstick ESP, I've been wanting this lipstick for ages!! And finally I have it! Yay! As you can see it is the most gorgeous purple colour and bonus points is that it lasted me alllll day! The colour works fabulously with Sugarpill's Buttercup cake and Poison Plum eye shadow.

 

In this look I was feeling the reds, it is a fierce colour after all. So my eyes are Demon by Illamasqua blended with Sex (don’t be rude it’s the name of their white eye shadow!) The lips are a blend of Mac's Diva and Film Noir; I'm feeling the two tone lips this months.

 So after playing with this amount of colour a girl needs a good cleanser that'll remove all without the need for rubbing! This is my new all in one product to quickly remove all. Its Garnier's Micellar Cleansing water for sensitive skin. The product removes makeup as well as cleanses without the need to rinse so its prefect for someone on the go! I have to admit I was slightly suspect with the claims the cleanser had but am pleasantly surprised, it removed all my makeup even Illamasqua's eyeliner which is very very hard to remove without rubbing (its one of the amazing things about the product!) The best thing was after my skin had a fresh, toned feeling that wasn't tight or had any residue left over. Perfect for after a long night partying! And the price is fabulous for the amount that you get. (It states that one 400ml lasts up to on average 200 cleanses.)

Zombie Tramp: SFX demonstration

A few weeks ago I held a few demonstrations for Blackburn College, inviting my media makeup artist, beauty therapist and hairdressers to come and watch a little demonstration of what I do. It’s a chance for other students from other courses to get a taster of being a media makeup artist and it proved to be a successful week.

I held demonstrations for fashion and photographic using my headdress, see blog below and I also held a SFX demonstration which was specifically aimed at my level 2 media makeup students as a taster into what Level 3 students do. As everybody know SFX is my favourite area of media makeup and its eventually what I would like to go into full time; dream job would be working for an effects studio making monsters and creatures all day! So this session, I have to admit was one of my favour demonstrations of the week.

My theme was zombie tramps, last year I did zombies vs. tramps and this year its all about the evolution! Plus part of the unit in level3 is to create a believable tramp character so this demonstration just introduces them to some basic application techniques e.g. ageing, false hair applications, scraps, cuts etc.

I sculpted and casted the prosthetic piece and tried to challenge myself with creating a realistic skull. I’ll admit it does need some work on the shading and shaping of the bone structure but overall I didn’t think I did that badly. Once again the prosthetic piece was made from gelatine as I am still saving up for the prosthetics course which teach the foam latex and silicone prosthetics…..

The fabulous Leah was a fantastic model for me today and to keep the session interactive I let students come up and help me apply the makeup.

 

 

A lot of the products used were my favourite, used in previous looks such as Blood Mary’s Spray Blood, I still make a mess when applying this but it gives the most brilliant, realistic blood splatter, plus its quick and easy! The main colours of the piece were using Grimas casualty palette L which contains all the cream colours needed to colour a piece like this, I am saving up at the moment for the Skin Illustrator palette but am thinking that I’ll pick this up at one of the Make Up conventions this year and do a review on it for you guys.

I feel like the application was pretty successful in the time I had to apply it and I think the concept could do will a polish but it worked for the demonstration plus the students seemed to enjoy the session. Leah had great fun afterwards scaring passers-by in the beauty salons which was fairly amusing!

I do love my zombies, this was one was a little too clean, needed some darker colours I think.

Creative Make Up Demonstration; "Warrior"

Last week I was a busy bee; doing creative fashion demonstrations as well as SFX demonstration with a variety of students from Blackburn College, from my fabulous media makeup students to hair and beauty students.

It was an extremely long week, but I got to meet a lot of new students and speak to those who were interested in joining my media makeup band of merriness. In this blog I’ll be covering my creative makeup session and what I created for the students which included the use of the headdress I created and spoke about in previous blog.

So the whole theme for this creative makeup demonstration was “Warriors”, I always like the creation of strong looking images using creative makeup techniques and figured that this would inspired the students to create and imagine. My design focused on inspiration taken from Japanese Theatre, Kabuki in particular as I absolutely love the masks worn. It’s an idea that’s been floating around in my head of a long time and I wanted to challenge myself with creating a headdress. The main inspiration for the headdress focused more on dark nature and creating a bit of a contrasted between the structured, edgy makeup design and the natural, almost softened effect of the headdress.

 

The techniques that I wanted the students to have a play with was primarily creating distinctive patterns using eyeliner, as it’s something that most students fear. I use several brushes to create the detail work; flat angled brush, thin round brush and medium round brush but it is up to you the artist to find a brush that you feel comfortable with using. In order to get the straight lines the main 3 lessons are use guideline dotes, use an anchor point created by your little finger and practice. It’s all about building your confidence and reducing that shaky feeling where you stop breathing when applying!

 

 

 

The base colours were applied using manual buffing of cream foundation mixed with applying airbrush, MistFX red. The reason why I used a mixture of the two was because only my media make up level 3 students are trained to use the airbrush equipment and so I wanted the other students to have a techniques that they can apply. I will admit I absolutely love airbrush application, it quick and creates a beautiful blended and smooth application. MistFX colour is a fantastic product for applying body art or creative makeup and it can be used through an airbrush gun (once mixed with distilled water) or manually. Therefore it’s a two for one sort of product!

As stated in previous blog entries, the headdress was created by moi, using wire to create a “hat” shape and creating horns and the bird skull using a clay putty that can be cooked in the oven to harden.

I held these demonstrations 4 times during Blackburn College Industry Week and meet a lot of lovely new people as well as using my own media makeup students as models…thankie guys! And hopefully I inspired some more creative make up applications and may be inspired a few students to join the media makeup course next year.
