Concrete Minerals Zombie Girl Set, Time to play with colour!

Today's blog is going to be all about Concrete Minerals fabulous eye shadows.

Below is a look that I created using some of the eye shadows from Concrete Minerals large selection of colours available. All of which are mineral based, completely Vegan and Cruelty-Free as well as made without preservatives or fillers. Which for Make Up Artist is exactly what you want to hear!

As you can see below the pigments are pretty damn good...

Now let's get to the wonderful products that I used to create the look above.
I bought the eye catching Zombie Girl collection as well as 3 other loose eye shadows which took my fancy.

The first thing that drew me into these products were the quirky names given to the different colours as well as the fabulously art work on the front of the tin by Michael Cook, very rockabilly.

So the colours that are included in the tin include the following (from top row, Left ----> Right); "Nightmare" (gorgeous purple), "Living Dead" (luscious green) and "The Vaccine" (baby blue/grey tone)

From bottom row, left ---->right;
"Quarantine" (pinkie purple tone), "Graveyard" (light brown tones with slight shimmer of pink) and "Blood and Guts" (rusty red/brown with this beautiful shimmer of blue tones)

As I said above, wicked memorable names that suit that rockabilly punk style the brand gives off. Very me!

Below are the swatches on skin; from left to right; "Quarantine", "Nightmare", "Graveyard", "Living Dead", "Blood and Guts" and " The Vaccine".

As you can see they are all lovely shimmery mineral based colours each with an undertone that sparkles through.

The other colours I bought were loose eye shadows; "Napalm" (bright orange), "Smut" (dark/dirty pink/purple tones) and "Kinky" (gorgeous dark black with navy blue/teal sparkly tones)

Below in the swatch the colours are from the bottom up; "Napalm", "Smut" and "Kinky".

Like I said all the colours have this sparkly hint (or in some of them more then just a hint!) of shimmery tones that just add that extra dimention to the eye shadows allowing them to look different in different lighting. Bonus!

They are all buildable in colour and work even stronger when using a eye shadow primer underneath; Concrete Minerals offers their own primer called "Electric Eye Primer" which I am wearing in these looks. Again its 100% vegan and filler/preservative free with a soft texture. A little goes a long way with this product.

For this look I combined "Blood and Guts" with "Graveyard" to create a multi dimensioned application, with "Smut" applied at the ends of the eyes to create that elongated eye effect. Underneath on the lash line I've used "Napalm" for an extra little kick of attention.

Fiery red brows seem to set the whole look off further with matching red lips defined by black liner in the corners for that perfect pout.

So what do you guys think?

I would definitely recommend the products above. Concrete Minerals also offer Pro Matte Eye shadows which is a selection of bright matte shades (which will be my next purchase I feel, loving the look of Hi-Fi!), Lip tints, Nail polishes and other collections such as their colour stacks.

Hope you give this look a go and try the products for yourself, my next blog will probably be about IMATS London which I'll be attending next Saturday....uber excited about this!!!

So stay tuned!
Bye for now my lovelies,

Summer Brights using Sugar Pill makeup

Today's blog is going to be a quick one about a look I did a few days ago which I've had a lot of people asking about. Now I would love to do a tutorial video to show the madness in my colours but at the moment I don't have the equipment to film it but fingers crossed soon that will change and you'll get to see a tutorial on the application rather just a run through of products.

So, here is the look. I am totally loving matching up my hair to my make because of all the different shades of purple/blue going on at the side!

The first that I do is my eyebrows, some people like to do the brows last but I like to do it first because I feel that it frames my eye work allowing me to judge if the makeup is going just right.
The best brow brush to use for this is Illamasqua's Angled Brush, £19, the reason why it works so well for brows (as well as eyeliner) is because the brush hairs are short therefore you have more control to the line work. I found this brush gives full the straightest line work.

The colours that used on the brows for this look was a fade of Sugar Pill Cosmetics Heart Breaker palette. Starting with "velocity", which is the in your face blue, at the beginning of the brows fading into "2am", purple shade, and "Mochi", that gorgeous aqua green/blue colour, applied to the tail of the brow. I love this combination because it goes well with the fades in my hair but also its nice summer brow colour, something different then your average brown or black brows. If you want to stand out from the crowd I recommend you brighten those brows!

The eye shadow is a blended combination of "Mochi" from the palette above with "Poison Plum", the bright purple, and "Buttercupcake" , that radiant yellow,  from Sugar Pill's Burning Heart palette. These colours work so well together with the "Mochi" working with the brows and "Poison Plum" working against "Buttercupcake" as a contrasting colour. Ever wanted your eye shadow to stand out, choose colours which are opposite each other on the colour wheel, these colours will 'Pop' when put next to each other!

As you can see the Sugar Pill palettes have the most amazing pigments and strong colours that apply as you see them, no wishy washy colours. Bonus to those who are attending IMATS London next week, Sugar Pill will be attending with all there marvellous colours and products. I can't wait to go and meet the Sugar Pill girls, they are my rainbow icons!

To finish the eyes off and also match the brows further I added "Kandy Eye" glitter sprinkles in "Shock Tart" underneath the eyes, which is a shock blue colour that closely matches Sugarpill's "velocity". This adds a little glitter bomb to the look and sparkles beautifully in the sun!

Finish the eyes off using Eyeko's Skinny Liquid eyeliner and Eye Do Mascara, both fabulous products. You can read a review on the mascara in a previous blog. The liner works incredibly well allowing for good definition and control of the eyeliner. The only thing you need to take care with when using the eyeliner is making sure the glitter doesn't get stuck on the felt tip end because it does tend to 'clog' it up slightly.

So the finished look..it is one of my favourite and I love the products that were used as they work so well.
The lips are OCC matte lip tar in "Seedless grape red" with a purple lip liner for definition.

What do you guys think?

OCC Lip Tar: Vintage Product Review.

Hello my lovelies!

In this blog entry am reviewing OCC liptar in Vintage. Now am no stranger to OCC, they are one of my favourite brands and I have all their airbrush foundations as I find them lovely to apply, with a beautiful effect. But it's been a while since I've done a review blog and since I recently purchase this lip tar, I figured this was a good place to start.

So OCC lip tars, there are a million and one colours and effects to choose from, we have the clear, gloss, matte and metallic in the range. Colours range from the nude side to the bright blues and yellows with the idea to be able to mix several colours for a personal customised shade.

The colour which a recently got was Vintage matte, which is a beautiful red colour, perfect for my vintage pop up salons and courses!

It came in a little bag with a cute little brush for application which I'll be honest on first sight I did think it would be like one of those useless little brushes you get in eyeshade sets but no. The brush had a point to the end which allowed you to use it like a liner for precision and then the fatter part of the brush to fill in. In fact it is just a miniature version of their #10 precision lip brush from their brush range. So it's all the perfect travel size for your handbag or kit.

It is true what they say on the website, the tiniest bit of product is needed for a full application, any more and its over kill people! Plus you put more on and this is when the product will bled outside the lip line which nobody wants! The colour pigment is amazing! Extremely bright and vibrant which is amazing considering the amount you need. And it lasts, mine lasted all day without the need to reapply, in fact it's hard to get off once it's on! I used my Lush UltraBland Cleanser to remove but whose complaining about long lasting lipstick!

The texture of the product on your lips is very nourishing but without that oil slick feel as it contains lip friendly, moisturising ingredient such as hemp oil and vitamin E which means to product will condition your lips; bonus points to the product for also containing peppermint oil which isn’t over powering but gives a nice "fresh" feeling.

I absolutely love this product as well as the colours available (my next buy is Black Dahlia) I would definitely recommend them to my students and other makeup lovers. You can buy selected colours from Selfridges, UK or pop on to the website for the full range at http://occmakeup.com

Thanks for reading.

Eyeko Mascara; Product Review

Mascara is one of those makeup produces where you can find yourself flitting from one to another in the desperate search for a perfect "one." Your constantly trying to find the right brush applicator, the right black, the right product to ensure your lashes aren't falling out at the end of the day/night due to them crusting up.

Well I have found this little gem whilst out shopping in Selfridges.

Eyeko is a uk brand established in 1999 offering award winning mascaras, liners, brow products as well as eyeshadow pens. It's regularly reviewed and used for many major beauty/fashion magazine editorials such as Harpers Bazaar, The Stylist, Glamour and Wonderland.

So the product I bought was Eye Do (all the products have cute quirky names), a mascara which boosts water resistance, carbon black with lash enhancing botanicals for lengthening and strengthen. Which I would have to agree with the claims.
The packaging was nice with the mascara bottle being a tube shape and you get a Eyeko shield to help get a clean application (it looks like a guitar plectrum which is cool)

The brush is a fat brush, which some people have issues with but…hence the eye shield in the box! I on the other hand love fat brushes as I feel I have more definition with these rather than a skinny brush. This brush also enables you to create volume which is clump free.
The product has nourishing ingredients which conditions your lashes to ensure you avoid that crusty, flaky look which is never good for your lashes. These ingredients include shea butter, antioxidants, vitamins and botanical proteins to condition and promote lash growth.
As you can see from the before and after pictures, there is definitely a difference in my lashes, which natural they are quiet long especially on the bottom lashes. I have curled the top lashes but only slightly as they don't really need it.

The mascara felt very light on and applying it was smooth and easy. It lasts all day without that drying out feeling that some mascara's have on your lashes and its definitely water resistance as I gave it the ultimate test at Alton Towers on the water flume ride…twice! With no smudges or Alice Cooper eyes!
I would definitely recommend this mascara for all makeup lovers and makeup artists, the price tag is on the higher end at £20 but you get what you pay for which in my opinion is like a moisturizer for your lashes whilst still lengthening and defining them.
Check them out for yourself at their website:  http://www.eyeko.com, I shall definitely be looking into their eyeliners and their "Me and My Shadow" product.
Bye for now lovelies!

Creature From The Black Lagoon SFX work

This creature creation has been something that I've been working on for a while, just because of all the different elements connected to making it work plus I've fairly busy these past couple of days!

It was done for a live demonstration at Blackburn Market with my students using the theme "under the sea", I decided it would be a good idea to challenge myself by doing a complete head prosthetics with "add on's!" I had the fabulous Alice Ashley assisting for this one as well as the equally fabulous Alex Gillet modelling for me…it was the dream team!

So it all began with the sculpture, which I used my shiney new tools that I got from United Makeup Expo back in April by the extremely helpful PS composites, http://www.ps-composites.com/ .Love them, they are so easy to use and create such definition in the sculpt.

I did create a video showing my sculpting of the piece which can be viewed here .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaYXxT4IrZ0

After I casted the piece in plaster, I created the piece from gelatine...also bought from PS composites. I have to say that this prosthetic looks a lot better then my others, so am really happy with the development in myself. I think it was down to the tools I used as I was able to apply more details within the clay this time.

The next process was a DIY moment, I needed to make fins for my creature and a Mohawk fin. So I thought wire was the way to go. Just normal garden wire, bent into the shape of fin and then I used tan tights pulled over the wire frame and stitched it on to the frame.
To get that fish scale effect I added liquid latex all over the fins then left them to dry.
To paint them I used my brand new Skin Illustrate palette, which I bought from PPI http://www.ppi.cc/

I used the NecroManic palette in Darth Moss and Vile Bile over the fin and then the FX palette in Aged Blood to highlight the "veins." This is the first time that I've used these products (its taken me a while to save up for them!) And I love the build up of shades that you can create with them. Brilliant product to use for dimention.

Once the fin's were done, I started colouring the piece using similar colours as well as airbrush work on the base colours and contouring of the creature using Temptu Dura Liquid Pro Set - Trauma (http://temptu.com/pro/dura-pro-liquid-pro-set-5024.html), in various colours. This is the first time I've used this set and it worked for what I wanted to do. It was easy to build up the colour and mix for added dimention.
I also used the Skin Illustrator palettes for more detail and added dimention.

And here is the final look, Alex Gillet model for me and I had the lovely Alice Ashley assisting with the application.
It was all done live at Blackburn Market and although there were a few moments of "improvisation", it all worked out.

I am happy with the way it turned out, there are ,obviously for me!, areas that I want to work on and challenge a little further but am happy.

There is a video of the application which can be viewed here: http://ow.ly/x95cw

I have also uploaded more images on my facebook page; https://www.facebook.com/Ruth.E.Moulden.MUA

Let me know what you think.
