So Much Crafting, Prosthetic Makeup and a whole load of designing!
This week has been a whole load of crafting in preparation for the Comicon's coming up this year. Its been a lot of learning, trial and errors as well as a whole load of ordering material...and I would be lying if I said that I was loving it! Crafting and designing characters has always been so therapeutic for me, I can just focus solely on my creations and (for the majority of the time) forget about the chronic pain stuff.
So last blog I showed you a sneak peak of the chest piece that I was working on but not the final piece. So here it is....
Now this piece am super proud of...and yes this is also for sale.
Makeup wise, its been a bit slow because I've been wrapping up with my teaching work last week.
I posted the makeup tutorial video on the HUDA beauty palette which I got a lot of nice attention from.
I love this palette though, its so pretty the metallic, matts and shimmers in all those luscious oranges, yellows and reds...lovely warm colours. Warm colours aren't a normal style I gravitate towards but with this palette I love them.
I haven't bought much from HUDA beauty in the past but I think I may be buying more in the future...well when I make the money back that I've spend on all that crafting and fabrication!!!
This weeks YouTube video going up will be a prosthetic makeup one...yes its the one I gave you a tease of in the last blog.
The look is created with two silicone prosthetics created by moi using EcoFlex and Stuart Bray molds, the brow piece and the mouth piece.
Both of these pieces will be available to buy at both the Preston Comicon and the Blackburn Comicon. If your interested in buying let me know and I'll hold them for you to collect and pay at the event.
Because am now officially on my holiday's from work, I have plenty of time to plan and design stuff so along with the work for the Comicon's that am doing I also have two other events that am planning to attend.
One being a competition and the other a music festival that I regularly help out at. I think for this blog, I'll tell you about the music festival cause I need to sort somethings out regarding the competition before I official state am competing!!
Confessional is the name of the music festival and I have been for the past 3 years I think, with a stall applying themed face painting and glitters. The themes have been some awesome ones in the past such as David Bowie were I was applying Ziggy lightening to people. As well as the awesome themes, the whole event is in an abandoned/disused church which gets all fancied up. The event typically starts at 4pm and runs till midnight with loads of live bands playing and a DJ set based on the theme that year. Some of the bands that I've seen there have been Cabbage, Amber Arcades and Bang Bang Romeo which are all awesome local or indie bands.
This years Confessional's theme is "out of this world" with a kind of 80s B rates Sci-fi feel and will be held on 8th Sept 2pm-midnight (yay longer then last years festival!) at Holy Trinity Church and will feature bands such as Mold, Fruittones, The Ninth Wave and more!
I will be there of course with my right hand lady and another ex-student (who am yet to ask if she wants to do it!) and we will be offering face painting/glitter and new for this years festival face gems. So get your tickets ----- https://www.facebook.com/confessionalfestival
So my beautiful people, plenty of events that I will be attending so make sure you come along and say Hi to me!!!
Don't forget that Thursday I will be uploading another tutorial video (Demon prosthetic look) so make sure that you are subscribed to my YouTube Channel ----- https://www.youtube.com/user/RuthMouldenMUA

So last blog I showed you a sneak peak of the chest piece that I was working on but not the final piece. So here it is....
I have to say for my first chest piece/armour piece, I don't think I did that bad. I definitely learnt some lessons with it and my next one I think am going to try out a different material.
This will be available for sale at Preston Comicon and if it doesn't sell there then it will be available at Blackburn Comicon. If anybody reading this is interested then send me a message, I can hold on to it for you to collect at the event.
The other items I've been working on to sell is another arm piece, which I can't remember if I've talking about this one with you guys or not but here it is....

There are going to be more images of this look going up on my Instagram and Facebook page (@Ruth E Moulden MUA) so make sure you are following me on there!!
But back to the look, so with this look for some silly reason I decided that I would try apply on the hottest days ever!! I mean I had sweat dripping all over!!!
But I did it!! It wasn't the cleanest application I have ever done but it was a good application and am pretty sure I have the amazing adhesive Snappy G to thank for that one!!
If you have never heard of Snappy G, its an awesome silicone adhesive from https://www.neillsmaterials.co.uk which works wonders of staying powder and using it under some stressful...sweaty situations!!
Both of these pieces will be available to buy at both the Preston Comicon and the Blackburn Comicon. If your interested in buying let me know and I'll hold them for you to collect and pay at the event.

First Pain Management Session And Mass Making Cosplay and SFX Stuff for Comicon.
What a busy week I just had, wow!
As I mentioned before, I'm demonstrating SFX at this years Preston Comicon on 29th Sept and Blackburn Comicon on 17th Nov (links to the official sites listed at the bottom of the blog!); this year am planning on selling some headdresses, cosplay items like chest armour, arm pieces as well as selling some silicone prosthetic pieces. Which means some mass designing and mass making is required to ensure I create some super special awesome pieces for you guys.
Its slightly stressful, just because I've never really sold any of my pieces and I guess the worry is nobody will like them and I don't sell any but hey ho you got to try! I've got my Lisa with me for both events so am sure she will keep me positive and sane! Make sure you come and say hi to us!!
The first headdress that I've created for sale, I showed in my last blog but I decided to create a SFX character to go with the headdress AND make a tutorial for you guys. Even the prosthetics used are available to buy at both comicons, both of which are silicone and I will be putting instructions on how to apply them with them.

Here's a sneak peak of my purple demon character inspired by the headdress...
Sneakie Peakie….this look will be up on my YouTube channel very soon so make sure that you are subscribed to my channel.
The forehead piece and the mouth piece will be for sale (both are silicone and will come with instructions on how best to apply it) as well as the headdress.
As well as playing with SFX, which as everybody knows chills me out, I had my first pain management session last Wednesday. It was pretty...thought provoking … gave me a lot to think about and made me excited for the next sessions. The focus was on what pain is to us and how it makes us feel, think and behave which for me at the moment it makes me feel very confused as to why this pain is there and how its effecting my day to day life. As well as being angry, oh my word, I can get firey these days but this is all normal. I'll be taught how to deal with all of this. One of the main activities that we were taught to help us put things into prospective and give us a little calmness, is 3 minute breathing space. I have to admit this little activity has helped, all you need to do is sit comfortably (or lie down) and focus on your breath, then scanning your body to acknowledge any feelings, pains and thoughts. Then you use your breathing to bring you back to the present moment rather then thinking of a million and one things. It really did create a sense of calmness and even though I could feel the pain still, it made me realise that you can achieve a feeling of calm as well as have the pain. I've been doing the exercise everyday (I love sitting in front of my pond listening to the birds) the only time it didn't work was when I got incredibly worked up by a negative comment made...but am sure that the next couple of sessions will help me figure out how to cope in that situation.
The whole cosplay costume making is such a journey for me, it reminds me of when I first got started in prosthetics, I felt a little apprehensive and a little scared of doing something wrong but when I get into a project...am lost in it and forget all time!
Chest armour was something I wanted to try and create to sell but I wanted to start small using EVA foam rather then Worbla. EVA foam pieces are a lot more flexible and lightweight as well as basic to some extent. As always my fabulous assistant Lisa modelled for the pattern...
Once we had the pattern...time to cut the foam. I will admit that when I cut the foam and glued it together I thought I'd done something wrong just because of how it looked. But let this be a lesson to you all, be patient and stay focused it will all come together in the end!
As you can see, it looks a lot better once the rubber sealer is applied, once this was applied I started to get very excited! I mean not to toot my own trumpet, but come on, it looks pretty good for my first chest piece!
Once we had the rubber coating done, time for colour!! First coat was spray painting gold all over which looked ace because the spray I used had a multi-tonal effect to it, which meant it created a natural light and shade effect.
Next step is deepening the shadows and highlights to create some metal effects as well as a more 3D look. Then I started applying some steampunk elements such as screws, bolts, cogs etc.
And that's where am at, you'll have to stay tuned for next weeks blog for the final image of this creation...who knows may be I'll even do a little video so you can see the full effect!!
I'm not going to lie, Thursday's YouTube video could be one of two looks...the first one is a tutorial of how I created the purple demon look and the second one is using the new HUDA beauty palette and loose powder that I've hinted at on my facebook page.
Let me know which one you want to see...leave me a comment either here or on my facebook page and I'll upload to one that gets the most votes. Or I'll just play Eeny, meeny, miny, moe!!
Till next time my lovely people!
See you next Monday!!

Birthday Treats, New Makeup and New Creations as well as exciting news!!
Well it has been an extremely busy week, I haven't seem to stop! Between my Birthday treats (yay happy Birthday me), work/taster days and shopping with my big sister...its all been go!
Which is nice because it stops me thinking about the stupid pains in my head...well until I over do things and end up with a migraine in bed but to be honest last week wasn't too bad on the scale of how much of an inconvenience is my chronic pain...hiccups every now and then but manageable..ish.
So lets start at the beginning...my Birthday treats!!
Karl, the oh so lovely fella of mine, took me on a surprise little holiday to Edinburg. I have never been to Edinburg and I have to say I will definitely be going again! It was beautiful, I mean the drive up there was stunning! Mountains and hills and blue sky all the way, it was just amazing!
As part of my Birthday Weekend...Karl took me to the zoo. Its a bit of a tradition now that I am one with the animals in some form of way on my Birthday, either zoo, aquarium or something else where I can interact with the animals...don't ask me, its just a thing! My mantra is that am a flamingo among a flock of pigeons, so I need to be with my flamingo buddies!!
And penguin buddies...cause penguins are just awesome too!

Now Edinburg Zoo is famous for having panda's which I was absolutely speechless with how beautiful and cute they are. Luckily the boy Panda, Yang Guang, was active and munching on some bamboo whilst Tian Tian, the girl panda, was snoozing away.
The zoo was amazing, if anybody reading this has the chance to go...go...its a very educational and awesome place with loads of species of animals that you wouldn't normally get to see as well as amazing staff who talk to you and teach you about them and the conservation programs.
Whilst in Edinburg I recommend that you visit Mimi's Bake House, they do the best cakes! And the décor of the seating area is so kitsch and cute. They also have some amazing home made cakes at very reasonable prices.
I ordered a very delicious red velvet cake with a super berry ice tea and Karl had a Reese's peanut butter Brownie. They were AMAZING!!
As well as my Birthday trip, I was taken shopping by my lovely big sis, Frances. We went to Manchester which we haven't been in aaaages….as well as the usual clothes and random books, of course I bought makeup and LUSH stuff. I don't really do your typical talking review on my YouTube channel but am sure I'll be using the makeup in an up and coming tutorial for you guys to take a little look at.
HUDA beauty isn't a brand am completely familiar with and don't really own a lot of products from but I did get their new Easy Baking Loose powder and Rose Gold Remastered palette. Both products are pretty good, the palette colours are so smooth and very easy to blend with a mixture of metallic shades, deep rich reds and orange tones as well as iridescent shades.
I love the colours, so much so I used them the next day at a makeup demonstration I was doing at Blackburn College to promote the media makeup course. The palette was a little pricey...but its a good product.
And on to the good news...now I did hint at it last blog but now am officially announcing it here, its my triumphant return to SFX! I will be demonstrating the application of SFX, cosplay costume and head dress to create a crazy complete character at both Blackburn Comicon and Preston Comicon this year, with my glamourous assistant Lisa as always being my right hand laddddy!
This is a big thing for me, its been a year of poor health and not being able to do anything so am going all out on these events and I want you guys to come say hi!
BLACKBURN COMICON - 17th Nov
Get your tickets here----- https://www.blackburncomiccon.co.uk/
PRESTON COMICON - 29th Sept
Get your tickets here ------ http://www.prestoncomiccon.co.uk/
Preston's creation will be focusing on steampunk...I'll be dropping more hints closer to the actual event as well as on my Facebook and Instagram so make sure your following me on here and on there!
As well as watching my demonstrations, you will also have the opportunity to buy one of my creations; from headdresses, arm armour, chest armour, cosplay weapons and even smaller fascinators. All hand made by moi and available for you to buy!
And now on to this weeks tutorial...its another quick and easy SFX which can be created on the cheap but is really effective. Wax SFX are a great alternative to your silicone or prosthetic application which can be uber expensive were as wax is a lot cheaper.
The only major issue with wax, especially at the moment, is that it melts super easily. If your hands are hot its going to end up a sticky mess so this effect does require some patience and cold hands!
For this look, I used quiet a lot of Kryolan products as there are excellent quality with a nice cheap price tag.
For this look I used Cine Wax which is a nice translucent wax that is easy to blend into the skin as well as colour over the top. Because of its transparency, it means that you don't really need to add a lot of skin tones to disguise the piece if any at all.
PRODUCTS USED:
Kryolan:
- Pro Shield.
- Cine Wax
- Liquid Latex
Skin Illustrator:
- Bloody Five.
Glynn Mckay Bruise Gel in "Dark Red"
Nick Dudman's Pigs Might Fly Blood in "dark"
Brushes used:
Bdellium SFX brushes
Sigma and Hollywood Labs Ltd SFX brushes.
This blog was kind of all over the place but I have had a lot of things happening last week so its been a bit hard to fit everything in as well as manage the pain, which fingers cross, will be a bit easier after next week because I've got an appointment with the pain management clinic as well as attending a support group called Breathing Space, fingers crossed.
Next weeks blog should be a little more focused, hopefully.....maybe...….possibly.....ah well you'll have to follow me to find out I guess!
As always, Thursday will have the tutorial video of today's SFX makeup and don't you forget to subscribe because it all helps me to create more and more crazy mad looks for you guys.

Webster Wigs and LED lashes...Oh my...Time for a Cyber Goth look!!
It's been a fairly good couple of days and am feeling very creative. So much so I've been creating some new headdresses and designing some new costume pieces which will be for sale at my next Comicon demonstrations... here's a sneak peak at one of them ---->
Its always good when you get a good boost of motivation, I'm pretty sure that a big key to controlling my chronic pain is to distract myself with creative madness.
This weeks tutorial is focusing on some awesome eyelashes from Cyberdog which flashes and my first lace front wig from Webster Wigs. I absolutely love both of these!! I'm totally going to be buying more from these stores.
If you haven't heard of Cyberdog, its an awesome shiny flashy cyber store in Camden, London. I absolutely love Camden Market and Cyberdog is one of my favourite places to visit. Its just so colourful and alternative; you can find the most unique things. One of those things were these LED lashes, Eyelites! They are absolutely amazing and come in various colours. The great thing is that the lashes are connected to a small battery box that you attach to the back of your head. On the box is a button were you can change the setting of the lights so they flash at different speeds and one of the settings even makes them flash to sound!! Absolutely awesome! It was a little fiddly to attach but do able and once they're on they just feel like normal lashes, no extra weight on your eyelids. The control box that you attach to the back of your head is just the same, once its attached (it comes with a little hair clip) you can't feel it. They are pricey at £18 but totally worth it, the battery life last from up to 100 hours and there are 8 flashing modes, you can also get them in a selection of different colours.
For this look I used the white coloured ones and I can't wait to buy more colours.
The wig that I have on is from Webster Wig, "Halle" which is a fantastic lace front high quality synthetic wig. The colour is beautiful and very vibrant with lovely bouncy curls. This is my first proper lace front wig but luckily the wig came with a leaflet about how to put the wig on, care for the wig and style the wig. You also get a wig cap and it all came in a nice little bag. I absolutely love the wig, its so soft and perfect for my crazy makeup looks or just to put on when I can't be bothered doing my hair! The price of the wig was £50 but the website has a range of prices and styles of wigs to choose from; personally I think it was worth it because of the quality and I'll be definitely be ordering more in the future.
So the look I created with both these products is this, club kid style makeup. As always I will be uploading a tutorial video of how I created this look on my YouTube this Thursday so make sure your subscribed.

Rigid Collodion Quick and Easy SFX; but what is it?
When creating SFX makeups it can be overwhelming the amount of products and equipment there is out there, not to mention the cost of some these things. There are some kit staples that every SFX artist has in their kit and I believe that Rigid Collodion is one of them. Its a fairly cheap product that creates a very realistic effect that you will more then likely need for quick and easy casualty effect at some point in your career.
So what is this Rigid Collodion? Basically its a clear liquid that when applied to the skin will pucker, pulling the skin inwards whilst it dries which gives the illusion of a scar (or if coloured in a specific way can also create scratches and superficial cuts and even to some extent simulating wrinkles.) The depth of the scar depends on the amount of layers that are applied, that's the good thing about this product, it can be as subtle or dramatic as you need.
Like all SFX products there are some downsides to this product, its very very chemically smelly which means that you definitely need to be in a well ventilated area otherwise you and your model are going to get one hell of a headache! As with most SFX products ALWAYS do a skin test! And use a barrier cream/product to protect the skin and reduce irritation during and after/removal of the product. Talking of removal, NEVER pull/peel rigid collodion off, its unbelievable the amount of students I have that seem to love peeling SFX off...IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR SKIN PEOPLE!! Always remove properly using the proper removal products, in this case I love using Ben Nye Bond Off! because it feels nice and gentle, it also removes products fairly quickly. Other products that could be used are Spirit Gum remover which is typically used to remove adhesives but it will remove Rigid Collodion too.
In my next tutorial video on my YouTube channel, I'll be showing you how to create a nice basic scar (image of my arm) as well as some nice scratches/cuts on the face just to demonstrate how dramatic this product can be used.
In the video I will show how I coloured these effects as well as the basic application techniques.
Please make sure that you are subscribed: -----> https://www.youtube.com/user/RuthMouldenMUA
I think I will probably revisit the use of rigid collodion at a later date, there are a lot things that you could create with it and I think its a fantastic product when used correctly so stay tuned for some bigger casualty effects using this product.
See you next time!

The depth of the scar depends on the amount of layers that are applied, that's the good thing about this product, it can be as subtle or dramatic as you need.

I think I will probably revisit the use of rigid collodion at a later date, there are a lot things that you could create with it and I think its a fantastic product when used correctly so stay tuned for some bigger casualty effects using this product.
See you next time!
