Creative Makeup Demonstration and Lime Crime review.

Last week I took part in industry week at Blackburn College, this week was all about giving the students demonstrations and let them experience not matter what course they are on. Its really to give them an idea of what other courses are on offer to them. So me being me I took on quiet a lot of sessions/workshops, including creative makeup, bridal workshop, Sfx workshop and prosthetics workshop...the sfx workshops I'll be post photos of at a later date...they turned out quiet gorey....i may of scared myself by creating a hillbilly zombie which everyone knows is the scariest thing in the world!

Anyways my creative makeup demonstration, it was all about the colour and the craziness! I decided to team some effects with using the airbrush and stencil work, I absolutely love creating highlighting and shading with the airbrush gun...its so easy and you can effortlessly change the shape of anyone's face.

So with any great design you need a plan!

 

And from there we get our products together, now whilst doing this design I can across the yummiest lipgloss colour in the world. Lime Crimes beautiful Carousel Gloss in Holly Gram....oh its lovely sparkly green!! 

 

Easy application with this short brush...of course when working on clients you must always decant the product out onto your hand.

 

 

 

 

Just look at that luscious green colour and the best thing is that it goes on that intense on your lips!! Love it, its so eye catchingly lush! I recommend everyone invest in this product!!!! 

For this design I want full on colour so I whitened the face out and added harmonising colours first to change each models face shape, airbrush products by Temptu  and then spun it on its head with some contrasting colours in green.

My models hair totally made the image! Loved the results, loved using the products and my students loved experimenting with colour as after the demo I let them go nuts with it.... they really did go nuts!!!!

Crepe Hair MADDNESS with my lovely students!!!

The past few weeks have been uber mental...I have had workshops and demonstrations coming out of my ears!!! Creative make-up demos, Airbrushing Demos, SFX workshops, Bridal demos and prosthetic application workshops! But I will admit it has been ooodles of fun!
Promise once I sort out all the crazy photos of these events I shall be blogging about them! But first I want to tell you all the story about the Level 3 Media Makeup lesson where I taught crepe hair application work and ended up with a class of girls with bears and moustaches running around college with a Keith Lemon lookie likie (thank you Michelle!) running up to people!

It was the funniest lesson I have had in a long time!! Oh my word!! Tears....streaming people!! So without further adieu...my lovely media make-up students....with added hair!!

Aren't they a lovely bunch!! What I love about teaching Media Makeup especially in level 3 is their fearlessness to experiment with different methods even if it means looking like this rabble!!

 

My demonstration of crepe hair application, which turned into a Keith Lemon lookie likeie...complete with added costume! Michelle had use crying with laughter with this one, nice one girl!!

Crepe hair application is the cheapest way of apply false hair. Its made up of sheep wool so it is quiet itchy to begin with but once the application has been trimmed down and worn for a bit you do get used to it. I find that crepe hair is best used in the theatre as it still looks realistic as hair but on HD technology would fail to pass the mark as realistic. 

 

The lovely, clever bee Amy sporting a rather fetching 12 o'clock shadow going on there! My stubble demonstration, stubble is one of the quickest ways of adding some hair to a character, stubble wax is your best friend in this application, (I use Grimas....Grimas rock for theatrical products!!) and finely chopped up crepe hair, add a big brush to sweep it on the skin and viola stubble galore!!

Word of warning however...it does get slightly messy!! I recommend towel!

 My students had such a laugh during this lesson and it was a joy to teach them, they are some of the best students a teacher could wish for....it helps that they all as barking mad as I am!!!

Police Calander Shoot

Forgot to mention, I am helping out with the make-up for a calendar shoot for the local police to raise money for a children's charities with my wonderful students from Blackburn College. Here is a sneak peak from the last photo shoot, each shoot is based around  a Blockbuster film poster. The theme for this one was The Matrix, Amber and Samaira were the wonderful students who took part in this shoot.

New Prosthetics and old ageing make-up

It has been an uber busy week so lets start at the beginning.
AHT Blackpool competitions took place on Monday and all my wonderful students did amazing well and we got some wins in Avant Garde Hair styling, body art, nail art and evening hair styling! Woop woop, next stop is UK finals in March which am certain we will be winner some more prizes!!!

So my SFX lesson with L3 we looked at old age make-up in theatre and in film. Its something that I look practicing and messing around with because my number one love with make-up is transforming a persons face...the more extreme the chance the better.

The lovely Chloe was my model for my demonstrations.

So I taught the students 3 different methods of ageing a person; paint and powder techniques which is best for theatrical work as you can create some pretty dramatic looking old people! This method only uses creme make-ups and powder to set, its difficult to grasp at the beginning as my students found but like I always say practise makes perfect! The best creme make-up to use is Grimas...love this make for theatrical make-up it is ideal!!
 The second technique is the stipple technique using latex, honestly I do love this methods but it works even better with the paint and powder underneath and the third technique is prosthetic applications which is the favourite choice amongst MUA working on films/tv. So my students got to practise ageing on each other and for there first application did very well and am very proud!! Hoping to enter a few in an ageing competition in March!

So we all had lots of fun transforming each other into old people....next lesson will be on crepe hair and moustaches so am pretty sure my belly will hurt from all the laughing after this lesson!!

I also bought quiet a few prosthetic this weeks from a company called Nimba Creations. I have wanted to play with gelatin prosthetics for a long time and finally I have the chance to! I bought 3, cut wrist, broken nose and shredded nose...mmmm nice! I have only had time to apply the cut wrist so far but am so glad I bought them. Its seamless! and so easy to apply!

 In a few weeks times I'll be doing some demonstrations as part of industry week which include introduction to SFX and a demo of a full face prosthetic which am so excited to do because it means bigger better and gore-er!!

This weeks lesson demonstrations...gore gore and the beautiful 30s

 

Its been a busy week, both my level 2 & 3 group have started their new modules, 'the art of photographic make up' and 'media make up, SFX.'
Have to admit its my favourite topics to teach, demo and experiment with.

My level 2, started their work on their formative assessments, theme classic era, after all everything is influenced by the past so this is the perfect introduction to photographic makeup, my love of all things vintage/retro fits perfectly with this topic.
My demonstration focused on blocking out eyebrows with soap for a beautiful classic 1930s look on the lovely Peggy. It was fun doing the demonstrate especially when the students realised that to block out dark brows effectively you use a red colour and after I was told of a new technique of using matt red lipstick from the clever little bee that is Pam, it completely warped their mind! But the proof was in the result. Soap + powder + red matt lipstick/concealer + powder + flesh tones ( repeat if necessary) = no eye brows!

I would of liked to do another lay of blocking out but you only have a small amount of time to show the techniques and then the students get to practice or research.

 

Isn't it amazing what you can do with makeup, looooove doing this job!!!!!

 

So next we have the gore gore gore of my Level 3 lesson, again one of my favourite topics to teach. I think its because you can create such a drastic change in a persons appearance. The lesson focused on casualty effects, just the basics as I want to encourage my creative lot to create their own gorey delights! I included this montage video of casualty effects used in film, tv and theatre using dead cheesey music, can you guess what it was...ACDC if you want blood....of course it was! Nothing else would of fit so perfectly!

Obviously I made sure that the students understood to produce a SFX you need to understand how the body would realistic react to that "effect" and in most cases look at real casualty effects to visually see what happens.

So the demonstrations I showed the students focused of introducing each basic product used in SFX and what you could do with them. It started simple with bruises, I only have two types of products; cream and gel...am interested in the powder but can't find it anywhere...anyway for now product of chose is bruise gels because they're blend able, waterproof, realist and fab!

 

Next on the agenda, cuts using only cream makeup and bloooooood...easy 2D effect for sensitive skinned people unable to have things glued on!

 

 

Next its cuts using wax....

one of my favourite ways, best product to use is grimas derma wax with grimas casualty palette.

Latex cuts...not my favourite but has its place, all moulded on the hand. Prosthetic lesson is soon to come!

And my favourite effect, melty skin with Gelatine...yummy yum yum! I think its because its so much fun to apply!

My students seem to have fun being on the gore, and are beginning to develop some good skills, at first they became frustrated with their first attempts but as they began to understand the colour ratios and using real wounds to influence their work they settled into it.

I also managed to fit in a few extra effects, such as broken nose using wax.

and the lovely cold sore, created with a rice crispy...yum!

Exciting news! Vintage Fair goodness!

Exciting new news in the world of Ruthie, am booked to attend another marvellous, fabulous, glamorous vintage fair! This time its with Manchester Vintage, bring the best vintage has to offer with fabulous clothes, accessories and other items.

They are also holding various fashion shows throughout the day showcasing store holders goodies, a DJ, retro computer games such as Pacman, Space Invaders all with high-score competitions and prizes on offer and of course there is food available such as cream teas and cake, traditional hot dishes or ploughman's lunch with licensed bar selling real ales. Excitingly there is also prizes for best guy and girl on the day. And of course I shall be there providing my usual hair, make-up and nail treatments in my little pop up salon, so come down and see me. Its on 3rd March 10.30-3pm at Ramsbottom Civic Hall, Market Place, Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester, BL0 9AJ.
